Californian rabbit,

The Californian breed of domestic rabbit was developed in the early 1920s by George West. Rabbit breeders in the United States crossed Himalayan breeds and the Standard Chinchilla rabbit breed and New Zealand Whites. The purpose of this breed was to have a good meat breed that also had good fur. The breed did not become popular for at least 15 years after development. Today, the Californian rabbit is the second most popular meat-producing breed in the world. The fur quality allows this rabbit to also be classified as a fancy breed.

Appearance The Californian rabbit has big ears and is moderate in size, weighing around 7 to 10 pounds (3.5 to 4.75 kilograms). The original coloration of this breed was very similar to the Himalayan rabbit, with a predominantly white body and a dark brown on the feet, nose, ears and tail. They have pink eyes.

Feed and housing Commercial rabbit pellets are often recommended, though this is a disputed claim amongst rabbit rescue shelters and commercial breeders. Pellets are high in fat, which will render a fatter rabbit, (but is not a healthy choice for longevity concerns.) Feed 1/2 cup of pellets per 5 pounds of body weight every day. Ensure a steady supply of fresh water or the rabbit may not eat the feed ration. For rabbits under 8 months of age, feed unlimited plain alfalfa pellets. House rabbits may be fed 2 cups of fresh rinsed greens, vegetables (stay away from greens high in iron) should be given daily, and fresh fruit sparingly. Free choice hay, such as timothy-grass, should be unlimited and changed daily. Alfalfa hay should not be offered free choice to rabbits over 8 months of age because it is too rich in calcium.

Californians are an excellent meat rabbit breed. They produce large litters of 8-12 kits, which have a fast growth rate to fryer size (4-5lbs)in 8-12 weeks. Californians are a breed developed for show and commercial purposes.

Common diseases and disorders As with other rabbits, Californians do not do well in high or low temperatures. They are prone to hairball obstructions and matted coats if not cared for properly. When the rabbit is molting, dead hair can be removed with a slicker brush. Other health concerns include ear mites, Pasteurella, respiratory disease, dental problems, urinary bladder stones and fractured backs. Be quick to notice any changes in diet or litter box habits and contact a rabbit veterinarian immediately. The average life span of a breeding Californian rabbit is 5 to 10 years.

For those of you that are totally disconnected from how life really works the next part of this web page is detailed info on kulling animals and butchering.
All your animals should be loved respected and appreciated from birth to harvest. I believe the real animal rights people raise there animals with love and care during the entire life of the animal while actually allowing the animal to live a wonderful life.
It can be argued by many that most animal rights groups would prefer the animals not actual be born into this world so that they would not be killed. I believe what they are really trying to say is that the animals should not be mechanically raised by machines and in warehouses and in poor conditions.
To allow a animal life and to treat it well and to harvest it is not in humane. To harvest it for protein and nourishment is just the way life is transferred from one creature to the next.
When I'm done with this body please give it to the worms or the sharks as the need me as much as I need them.

A NOTE FROM ME. THIS ARTICLE I THINK IS A BIT OFF ON PRODUCTION BUT THERE POINT OF A FEW RABBITS CAN EASILY FEED A FAMILY IS VERY CORRECT. I WOULD PUT THE NUMBERS BELOW AT ABOUT 150# NOT 600#.  ITS STILL AN  AMAZING AMOUNT OF MEAT FROM A CAGED ANIMAL IN A 3 X 3 SPACE.

Whether your homestead is in the city or the country, meat rabbits can help you feed your family with lean, nutritious meat. Rabbits breed and grow so quickly that one pair of healthy does (females) can produce more than 600 pounds of meat in a year. Compare that to the dressed yield of 400 pounds for an average year-old beef steer. Rabbits also use feed more efficiently than cows do: According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a rabbit needs 4 pounds of feed to make 1 pound of meat. In comparison, beef cattle need 7 pounds of feed or more to create 1 pound of meat, reports Michigan State University’s Department of Animal Science.
